UK: Huge crowds pack out a hazy Hyde Park as Brit smokers mark World Cannabis Day

STONER gatherings have sparked up across the UK, as Brit smokers head out to celebrate 420, also know as World Cannabis Day.

Thousands of revellers gathered in London’s Hyde Park to enjoy the hottest day of the year so far, and mark the unofficial international cannabis celebration.

Many were there to smoke the illegal drug as well as raise awareness and call on the government to decriminalise the Class B substance.

The huge numbers of red-eyed, chilled out Brits heading out at once can overwhelm the cops, who effectively turn a blind eye to the smoking.

As the clock hit 4.20pm people flicked their lighters and sparked up together, and the park became coated in a visible haze, with many sharing images of the spectacle online.

“It gives a chance to connect with people,” said Barney De Hoedt, the editor of a magazine about cannabis culture called Quarter Life, speaking to the Standard.

“It’s an opportunity to talk to people who are interested in cannabis,” he added, arguing the cannabis can have positive effects.

Adam Ohman, a hemp producer, said the plant could be used to produce sustainable clothing and household items.

He called for “decriminalisation with some form of regulation” and said: “I want to see more of an acceptance.”

Jonathan, who declined to give his last name, said: “I usually come here most years.

“It brings people out, all walks and ages and backgrounds coming together. Most of the time it’s pretty chill.”

Another attendee, Will Yoxall, told the Standard: “It’s been really good, really friendly.”
