Matt Rodda has joined fellow MPs in a call to permit Alfie Dingley medical cannabis use

Reading East MP Matt Rodda has signed a petition in support of medicinal cannabis use.

He, along with a host of other MPs have shown their support for Alfie Dingley, a six-year-old from Kenilworth, Warwickshire who suffers from severe epilepsy.

The little boy is receiving medical cannabis treatment in Holland to reduce the number of seizures he has and now his parents want a licence from the UK Home Office so he can continue the treatment at home.

On Tuesday, March 20, Mr Rodda met Alfie's mum Hannah Deacon who was at 10 Downing Street to hand in a petition signed by more than 380,000 people who support the cause.

A spokeswoman for Mr Rodda said: "During trials which took place in Holland, it seems the use of medicinal cannabis has greatly reduced the onset of Alfie's epileptic seizures.

"Currently, UK law states that only in exceptional circumstances can a licence be granted for the use of such substances on a medical basis.

"Matt has signed a joint letter of support for Alfie to the Home Secretary, which seeks the permission to grant a licence for the use of medicinal cannabis under his 'exceptional circumstances'."

One of the Labour MPs who signed the letter was Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbot.

In her own statement, Diane Abbot MP said: "Alfieā€™s case is a heart-rending one. The Government could make an exception and allow the use of

"Labour is committed to an overall review of drugs policy. But Alfie needs treatment now and the Home Secretary should act now."
