US: Butte County Board of Supervisors bans commercial cannabis: Plans to reconsider in May, 2018 Taylor Torregano KRCRTV Tuesday 08 Aug 2017 Most spoke in favor of allowing commercial cannabis. "There are people in this room who have been waiting 20 and 30 years for this and it's here," said one supporter to the board. One woman said she has to travel long distances to deliver medication to her clients. "People are always asking me why don't you have a place here? Why do we have to go all the way to Shasta Lake city? Why do we have to go to Sacramento?" said Yudith, the owner of Dutch Farms Organics. "Or, why do I have to meet people somewhere with my baggie to give them the medication they need?" The board announced that they just aren't ready and would ban all commercial cannabis with the exception of the delivery from out of town areas. "So allow delivery to occur from retailers outside of the area, but be delivered to people in Butte County," Butte County's Casey Hatcher further explained. The board said they will revisit the issue in May, after staff gets a report of how commercial cannabis is working in other counties across the state. "The state of California hasn't even operationalized the regulations for commercial cannabis activities. The board chose today to wait and see what other jurisdictions experience. What's happening throughout the state," said Hatcher. Once members gather that information, the board said it will take lessons from other jurisdictions to understand if and how they might apply them to Butte County. For the few in favor of the ban at the meeting, it was a good decision/ "Nobody wanted commercial grows. Four out of five times that these issues went before the county, went before the voters, the opposition won and nearly every single one of them was shot down," said one opposer to the board. Still, many disagreed, saying people need commercial cannabis for medical purposes. "1600 patients and we're growing," said another medical marijuana business owner. "23 percent of them are seniors and they rely on us to provide them with safe cannabis." Butte County passed Proposition 64, the recreational use of Marijuana, with 53 percent of voters in favor. http://www.krcrtv.com/news/local/butte/butte-county-board-of-supervisors-bans-commercial-cannabis/601646850
