Ireland: Family has no choice but to leave Ireland to seek stronger medical cannabis for epileptic daughter

Vera Twomey has been campaigning to allow her daughter Ava Barry to be treated with the banned drug in Ireland

THE mum of a girl with severe epilepsy said the family must move abroad so she can be treated with potentially life-saving medicinal cannabis.

Vera Twomey has been campaigning to allow her daughter Ava Barry, seven, to be treated with the THC oil in Ireland — but the drug is banned here.

Vera said the family now have no choice but to leave Ireland for the sake of Ava’s health.

The youngster suffers from a severe form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome, however, since she started using a CBD-based medication her seizures have reduced from about 500 a month to about ten — but it’s not enough.

Vera told the Irish Sun: “At this stage we have no choice but to leave and it’s looking like it we’ll be going to Germany or Holland.

“We were advised that if we produced strong evidence that this treatment worked and it was necessary, then the Government would have to take a look at it.

“And the only way we can do that is to move. Myself and my husband Paul have four children so we’ll all have to go.

“It’s a last resort for us. The medical evidence is there that this drug works so we must give it a shot.”

Ava has been on the CBD-based treatment since last October, and has shown a marked improvement but Vera says she needs a stronger version of the drug.

She added: “This drug would change her life. I just hope Ireland gets its act together so that there are no more Ava Barrys.”
