Police move in during 420 cannabis demonstration held in Derry's city centre this afternoon

There were angry scenes after PSNI officers moved in during a cannabis demonstration held in Derry this afternoon.

Around 200 people gathered at Guildhall Square for the '4/20' event, which was organised by the LegenDerry Cannabis Club.

The event started at 4:20pm, at which time those in attendance were asked to 'light up' in a show of solidarity and unity with other cannabis users across the world.

4/20 is a code-term that refers to the consumption of cannabis, especially smoking cannabis around the time 4:20 pm/am and smoking and celebrating cannabis on the date April 20.

There were around a dozen police officers present at the event, which was also attended by the People Before Profit MLA Eamonn McCann.

However, there were angry scenes after police moved into the crowd gathered outside the Guildhall building, and removed a young man for questioning, which prompted shouting and chanting from the crowd.

He was then taken from the scene in a police vehicle, which resulted in those attending the demonstration staging a protest outside the PSNI station on the Strand Road.
