Sentinel Republic

Wednesday 12 Aug 2015

Group of protesters came to Parliament with joints. They lighted them outside the building to support Kelly van Gaalen, Kaikohe woman, mother of three children, who was jailed recently. Protesters demand legalization of cannabis.

Security did not interrupt them as few people smoke joints with legal mixture of herbs. It happened in 4.20 p.m, remarkable time for cannabis subculture. Office workers felt the smell on a ninth floor.

During the week protesters gather close to Supreme Court, but today they came outside the Parliament.

Alistair Gregory, spokesman of Cannabis Party in New Zealand, told to journalists that they considered to disobey laws infront of government, but decided to protest with herbal composition. He said that this protest was previously coordinated with parliament. They have rights for demonstration from 3.45 pm till 5 pm during August,12th.

Gregory is sure that 420 people will join their protest. The main reason they are gathering is to support legalization of cannabis for medical use at first and later for recreational.

He said that another goal of this protest is to collect signatures on petition for the freedom of Kelly van Gaalen.

This demonstration turns attention of many tourists. However, it did not attract attention of Sir Michael Cullen, former Deputy Prime Minister. He was followed to the door with shouts “Happy four-twenty”.

Among supporters was the father of Alistair, Andrew Gregory who reminded to the group about the case of Kelly van Gaalen, who was jailed for 2 years. She was charged in keeping cannabis for sale.

Kelly was a part of Kaikohe Hokianga Community Board. She was a leader of Arts Council in Kaikohe, and manager in local Business Association.

Last year three armed men attacked Kelly’s husband in their own home. He escaped and called for the police. When lawmen arrived they have found dried cannabis at their home. Total weighed of packs was 684g. In the court van Gaalen told that it was for personal use and to give to his friends. But Judge John McDonald insisted that upper limit for keeping cannabis at home is 28 g.
