UK; Devon Cannabis Club criticises police for removing hemp plant

Mid Devon Gazette

Friday 07 Aug 2015

THE chairman of the Devon Cannabis Club has criticised the police's decision to remove a plant understood to be cannabis growing on Bampton Street.

A Tiverton police officer uprooted the one foot tall herb in front of a group of amused onlookers.

It is believed the plant had grown as a result of the national 'Feed the Birds' campaign.

The movement sees activists sowing cannabis seeds across the country which has led to a number of plants sprouting up in unusual places.

It is not known how long the Tiverton plant had been there but it had gone unreported until this afternoon.

Daryl Sullivan, who chairs the Devon Cannabis Club, said the protest is entirely legal and questioned the police's authority to remove it.

Daryl Sullivan said: "I can't say I'm surprised it was removed but I would only want to reiterate that no crime has been committed."

"This protest is perfectly legal. Cannabis seeds are not prohibited. The law is only broken once an individual in any way tends to the plant, waters it, or tries to harvest it.

"I would like to ask the police on what grounds they have removed it and whether they think this is an appropriate use of their time and resources."

The 25 year old said the sight of seeing the herb grow in Devon "pleased him immensely".

He said: "Cannabis Sativa has been grown in this part of the world for centuries, albeit mostly the non-psychoactive Hemp varieties.

"Plenty of village and town names in Devon that betray their history as Hemp farming areas."
