Andrew Doyle is seeking votes in the Paisley and Renfrewshire North constituency under the banner of Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol (CISTA)

A Paisley dad is bringing a personal campaign into the heart of the General Election by standing as a candidate for a brand new party.

Andrew Doyle is seeking votes in the Paisley and Renfrewshire North constituency under the banner of Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol (CISTA).

The 52-year-old Ferguslie Park man has been campaigning for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis since 2006 and has personal reasons for championing the cause.

His believes his son, who has been diagnosed with epilepsy, would benefit if medicinal cannabis was legalised.

Andrew, who is a full-time carer for his son and partner, has been inspired by the experiences of Charlotte Figi – an American schoolgirl who was diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy known as Dravet syndrome.

She was having up to 300 seizures a week and her parents were told to take her home and prepare for the worst.

However, after they tried giving Charlotte a mild strain of cannabis, she made a dramatic improvement.

The specially-grown strand of medicinal marijuana, now dubbed Charlotte’s web, was developed by the Stanely brothers, who farm cannabis in Colorado.

Andrew said: “My son took a seizure when he was 19. He’s now 23 and is on medication.

“The doctors have diagnosed him with epilepsy but I want a second opinion. There are a lot of other things it could be, not just epilepsy.

“Legalisation could help my son and other people. If he could get this, then it might help him get out there and get work and I could do something else as well.

“I want to highlight these issues. When you’ve got people like Richard Branson coming out and saying he supports legalisation, then that’s a big deal.

“There’s a change coming.”

Dad-of-two Andrew saw CISTA advertised on Facebook and immediately signed up as an election candidate.

He said: “When I saw the party, I thought it was great, so I put my name forward to stand as a MP.

“The US state of Colorado has legalised cannabis and, in one month, made $70million.

“They’ve put $15million of that back into schools. They’re using the money for good things.

“All we’re asking for is the government to have a Royal Commission to look into legalising medicinal cannabis.”

? Also standing in the Paisley and Renfrewshire North constituency are John Anderson (Scottish Conservative and Unionist), Jim Halfpenny (Scottish Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition), Ryan Morrison (Scottish Green Party), Gavin Newlands (SNP), Jim Sheridan (Scottish Labour Party) and James Spiers (Scottish Liberal Democrats)
