Crowds defy BAN to hold 'dope demo'

HUNDREDS of campaigners packed into George Square calling for the legalisation of cannabis.

Around 150 people gathered in George Square yesterday afternoon as part of the annual '420 event' which calls for the legalisation of the Class B drug.

The Glasgow Cannabis Social Club organised the event despite Glasgow City Council refusing the group permission.

The event, which began around midday and was scheduled to run until 8pm, saw groups of people sitting together on the grass listening to music playing over the speaker system from the main tent.

Chris MacKenzie, 26, who runs the Glasgow Cannabis Social Club said: "It's going great, there's a good atmosphere here and we've had a lot of support from the eleven sponsors we have.

"We have tried to work with the council but they have refused to grant permission for the event four years in a row.

"Nothing will stop the freedom of expression we have here.

"We wanted to get the community together to network & stand with like minded people.

"We are taking this further with the Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol political party (CISTA) which I am part of and represent the North West

"I want to show that there's a better way to regulate drugs and hopefully I can do that from within politics."

Paul Birch, the chairman of CISTA spoke at the event.

He said: " This party was set up because UK drug laws are unjust and based on a 1971 drug law hangover."

One of those in attendance was cafe worker Dan Church, 24, who travelled through from Dundee.

He said: "I mainly came here to support the event.

"I think it hasn't been made legal because it would be hard for the government to tax.

"If the government really cared about the people they would look at the benefits of cannabis in the medical community."

Another of those in attendance was tree surgeon Peter Morton, 37, from Glasgow.

He said: "In a wider sense, I think this is about not wanting the authorities to control what we are doing.

"With things the way that they are, it's mainly small time gangsters who are making money from it rather than legitimate businesses.
