UK: Hundreds due at War Memorial Park drugs rally

HUNDREDS of campaigners are expected to gather at the War Memorial Park on Sunday as part of a national protest to get drug laws changed.

The Coventry and Warwickshire Cannabis Community are staging a protest against the criminalisation of medical and recreational cannabis.

Over 300 people are expected to show their support at what is being called Smoke Out

It is one of several similar protests taking place across the UK as part of National Pot Smoking Day.

Some face the risk of prosecution by smoking at the protest which takes place between 2pm and 6pm.

But organiser Jay Evans, from Finham, said they were not promoting or encouraging the use of marijuana.

“This is very much a peaceful protest which aims to highlight the need to legalise cannabis,” the 20-year-old told the Observer.

“Research has shown cannabis can help people with illnesses such as cancer and it's also common knowledge other substances such as alcohol are a bigger burden on society.”

A city council spokesperson confirmed they were aware of the protest and police in Canley had also been in contact with the group.

A spokesperson said: “We are currently talking to the organisers and the police to find a way for the rally to pass off safely and within the law.”

Last year over 10,000 people took part in a similar protest in Hyde Park, London and similar numbers are expected again this year.
