Paraguay president rejects marijuana legalization

New Zealand Herald

Friday 03 Jan 2014

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) Paraguay's President Horacio Cartes says he's against legalizing marijuana, calling it an addictive drug that destroys lives.

Cartes said Thursday that he's seen his former high school classmates "suffer and die" from the effects of marijuana, and make others suffer as well.

Cartes also called marijuana "the first point of contact with other drugs."

Paraguay supplies much of the cannabis currently smoked in Uruguay, which is launching a legal marijuana market in hopes of outselling organized crime.

Anti-drug chief Luis Rojas told The Associated Press that Paraguay ranks second in the Americas in marijuana production, after Mexico.
