UK: Cannabis on agenda at [Essex] park gathering
Chelmsford Weekly News Thursday 12 Sep 2013 The Essex Cannabis Community wants to discuss drug laws and the medicinal uses of it, on September 21. Between 1pm and 6pm, anybody will be welcomed to share their views. But there has been criticism of the event because of the subject matter and fear of the Class B drug being smoked. Danny Kelly, a co-founder of the group, said: “It is not going to be a big smoke up. “Some people probably will smoke, but we’re not there to promote that side of it. “We want lots of people who don’t consume or like cannabis to come along so we can tell them our side of the story.” Organisation of the event has already raised eyebrows. Chelmsford MP Simon Burns said he did not disagree with the gathering, but would have an issue if the drug was smoked in the park. He added: “If cannabis is going to be used at the meeting then I hope the police will enforce the law as it’s illegal and I oppose the flouting of the law. “I don’t support the legalisation of cannabis for recreational use because of the evidence available that it can lead to mental health problems. “I see no reason why the meeting should not go ahead to debate the issue, but if people who attend are determined to break the law, justice should take its course.” But Chris Philbin, who stood for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance party in the 2001 General Election for Chelmsford East, said this will be a good chance for both sides of the argument to be looked at. He added: “The current drugs laws are ridiculous. We’re just asking to be tolerated.
