British national sentenced to 15 year in jail after pleading guilty to the importation of 8kg of cannabis, fined €20,000.

The court has sentenced a British national, Stephen John Bradbury, to 15 years in prison and fined him €20,000 after he was found guilty of trafficking 8kg of cannabis.

Bradbury admitted to the crime before facing a trial by jury.

The court, presided by Justice Michael Mallia, heard how Bradbury conspired with two Indian nationals to traffic the drugs to Malta from India.

The drugs were to leave New Dehli and arrive in Malta via Dubai, with Bradbury planning to cash in €5,000 for the delivery.

Bradbury was however intercepted by police and customs officers as soon as he landed in Malta onboard an Emirates flight from Dubai. Police and customs officers intercepted him at the airport and searched his luggage. In a false bottom a packet was found containing just over 8 kgs of 10.5% pure cannabis resin. The street value of such amount was €51,621.65.

Assisted by lawyer Malcom Mifsud, the accused pleaded guilty to trafficking. Justice Michael Mallia handed the convicted a 15-year jail term, fined him €20,000 and ordered the destruction of the drugs..

Inspector Dennis Theuma prosecuted and Dr Maurizio Cordina appeared for the Attorney General.
