Sri Lanka: Largest ever cannabis plantation found

The Wildlife Conservation Department's Flying Squad has raided a large scale Cannabis (Ganja) plantation within the Yala National Park cultivated using modern technologies.

This large scale plantation has been discovered inside Zone 1 of the Yala National Park.

Wild Life Department officials said that this is the first time that a ganja plantation of such a large extent was discovered where the latest technology, including solar - cells have been used to cultivate the weed.

The Wild Life Department Flying Squad has taken into custody many modern equipment and material which include two solar-cells of 5 ft. high, two high power water motors powered by solar power, three high power water motors powered by fuel, 550 meters of plastic pipes, a bag of Cannabis seeds, one gun, petromax lamps, 50 kg fertilizer bags and a large stock of fuel.

They have also taken into custody two suspects who were operating the cultivation project. Around 20 persons had engaged in daily duties in the Cannabis plantation. (niz)
