Netherlands: Dutch cannabis cafes on trial for selling grass to foreigners

Washington Post

Wednesday 12 Jun 2013

BUSTED: Owners and staff of three cannabis-selling cafes went on trial in the Netherlands city of Maastricht, charged with selling marijuana to foreigners. Both sides hope the case will clarify the legality of a clampdown on so-called “coffee shops.”

OUT-OF-TOWNERS A DRAG: Coffee shops are banned from selling marijuana to people who don’t live in the Netherlands. The aim is to clamp down on thousands of drug tourists driving in to stock up on weed, creating a nuisance.

HEAD GAMES: Maastricht differs from Amsterdam, where authorities allow tourists into coffee shops because of the economic boost they give the city.
