US: Burlington voters pass cannabis referendum

Burlington Free Press

Tuesday 06 Nov 2012

Burlington voters today approved by a wide margin — albeit only in principle — the legalization, regulation and taxation of cannabis and hemp products.

The referendum passed with 70 percent of the cast votes.

Despite the support for legalization, the referendum is non-binding: It changes no laws.

However its sponsors say it effectively polls Burlington residents on their receptivity to changes in statewide legislation (likely some sort of decriminalization) that might emerge early next year.

The City Council approved this measure’s place on the ballot by an 11-3 vote in September.
