PETALING JAYA: A college student from Nigeria was sentenced to six years jail and 12 strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of cannabis and methamphetamine at an apartment in Puchong here, five months ago.

Odumegbe Chukwudi Micheal, 27, was arrested at unit No A-20-1, Pangsapuri KOI Kinrara Puchong, Selangor, at 7.30am on Feb 19 after 119.1 grammes of cannabis and 0.67 grammes of methamphetamine were found at the premises.

Judge Balqis Aini Mohd Ali handed him six years jail and 12 strokes of the cane for the cannabis offence and a year’s jail for the methamphetamine offence.

The sentences are to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on Feb 19.

He was charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for both offences and was liable to be jailed a minimum of five years and a maximum life sentence and a minimum of 10 strokes of the cane for the first and a maximum fine of RM100,000 or five years jail or both, for the second charges.

In mitigation, defence counsel R Tirukumaran urged for a lenient sentence saying his client had cooperated with the court by admitting guilt, was remorseful and wanted to go home.

Deputy public prosecutor Zhafran Rahim Hamzah had urged the court to hand down a heavy punishment citing that drug offences were on the rise in the country.

Meanwhile, seven of the accused’s friends, three locals and the rest Nigerians, pleaded not guilty to the same charges.

They were Norelaihan Pardan, Norhasnita Md Kamaludin, Dhiya Raihana Abdul Razak, Azorie Ifeanyi, Gemudu Andy Nnambi, Jude Obodo and Idris Abdul, aged between 25 and 35 years.

The court set Aug 9 for re-mention. — Bernama
