SINCE the beginning of the year, over 300 people have been arrested for being found in possession of cannabis which remains illegal in the country.
The suspects were arrested in different areas all over the country while some were nabbed at entry points such as border gates.

The police have decried the ever increasing numbers of dagga cases.
In total 384 people were arrested for the illegal possession of the drug and the number of foreigners busted for cannabis seems to be ever increasing. Dagga confiscated from the arrested people since January weighed 1 660.29 kg and valued at E664 118.

Among the 384 that were arrested were 32 foreigners. About three weeks ago three Botswana nationals were arrested in northern Hhohho for possession of dagga.

South Africans are now regulars in dagga trade.

Police Deputy PRO Stephen Dlamini said they had observed increases over the cases of dagga since the beginning of the year.

He said despite the clamp down by the police this did not deter would-be offenders.

"Some of the people are arrested during routine raids conducted by police while others were arrested at entry points and most of them have been prosecuted for their crimes.

"We also note the increasing number of foreigners who have been arrested for being found in possession of cannabis," he said.

Besides illegal possession of dagga, police arrested suspects who were found with hard drugs including cocaine and they were all foreign nationals.
An Asian was arrested for being found in possession of 10kg of amphetamine which was worth E2.5 million at Matsapha airport. He was on transit to a neighbouring country. Dlamini said a Nigerian was arrested for being found with 24.6 grams of cocaine worth over E6 000.
