Wales: Drug activists hit back at bong ban bid

South wales Evening Post

Saturday 05 Nov 2011

A LLANELLI drugs worker has been slammed over his "scaremongering" bong campaign — by cannabis legalisation activists.

Leader of the Cannabis Law Reform Political Party Peter Reynolds, has accused Chooselife Wales director Alan Andrews of using "false science" in his fight to rid Llanelli town centre of drugs paraphernalia.

The accusation follows Mr Andrews's claims that cannabis can be just as destructive as Class A drugs.

But Mr Andrews has vowed to continue in his campaign to stop the sale of legal water pipes, which can be used to smoke cannabis.

Mr Reynolds said: "It is false science, and it is scaremongering to say that smoking cannabis can be just as destroying as taking Class A drugs.

"There is a connection between them, but the main connection is that they are illegal. In other words, because someone is buying cannabis from an illegal dealer, they might well be offered something else.

"There is no more evidence to show people move from cannabis to harder drugs than there is to show people move from their mother's milk to alcohol."

Mr Reynolds added that it was through age restrictions that youngsters would be prevented from smoking cannabis, not by taking bongs off a market stall.

"Nobody is advocating children smoking cannabis, but in fact these pipes are a safer way of smoking it," he said.

"I do think they ought to be sold responsibly, but children can walk down a high street and see alcohol being sold, and that's much more dangerous than cannabis."

Mr Andrews replied that his concerns did not surround the issue of legality, but the "significant harm" cannabis can do to the user.

He said: "Campaigners say that if cannabis is legalised they can control it and only allow its use through age restrictions.

"I sometimes wonder if these people live in the real world. Are they unable to see that age restrictions and control has completely failed when it comes to cigarettes and alcohol?"
