Kenya: Man Gets Life in Sentence for Trafficking Bhang

All Africa

Friday 08 Jul 2011

A 27-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to life and a Sh1 million fine for trafficking in narcotics drugs worth Sh1,300. Jackson Safari Karisa was convicted on his own plea of guilty by Malindi Chief Magistrate Lucy Gitari. He was charged that on March 6 at Mbuzi Wengi village in Malindi district he was found trafficking in 48 rolls of bhang worth Sh960.

Chief Inspector Paul Nyamai told the court that anti-narcotics officers were tipped that Karisa was selling drugs. "The anti-narcotics police officers on patrol within the area were informed by one of the residents that the accused person was selling drugs and immediately proceeded to the scene where they saw a group of youths buying the drugs," he said.

Karisa tried to flee but police cornered him and on searching him recovered 48 rolls of dry plant material from his pocket suspected to be bhang and Sh345 in cash. "After analysis at the government chemist in Mombasa the 48 rolls were found to be cannabis," said Nyamai.

In mitigation, the accused said he didn't cross examine the police officers who arrested him because it was his first time to appear in court and they are the ones who arrested him. Karisa said the court should decide his fate. The Chief magistrate said drug cases are rampant in Malindi and deserve stiff penalties to discourage others.
