Cyprus: Nine years jail for cannabis trafficker

Cyprus Mail

Thursday 07 Oct 2010

A 33-YEAR-OLD Larnaca man was yesterday sentenced to nine years in prison for trafficking 11 kilos of cannabis.

Giorgos Stavrineas was arrested by the drug squad in Larnaca in October 2009.

He was caught on Makarios Avenue while hauling two suitcases on foot.

When asked by officers about the contents, Stavrineas said they were empty.

Officers opened the cases, which appeared empty, but when they tried to close them they noticed they were too heavy.

They cut the cases with a knife and discovered a large quantity of cannabis in both.

During questioning, Stavrineas said he collected the luggage from an unknown bald man at a nearby hotel.

He refused to tell police who was giving the instructions and the destination of the drugs.

All he said was that he would get paid €2,000 for the delivery.
