Malaysia: Van Driver To Hang For Drug Trafficking

Bernama

Thursday 17 Jun 2010

A van driver was sentenced to death by the High Court here today for trafficking in 94,835.6gm of cannabis five years ago.

Justice Zamani A. Rahim ruled that Mohd Zamri Abdul Khamis, 33, had failed to cast a doubt on the prosecution's case when he opted to make his defence from the dock.

He found Mohd Zamri, of Johor, guilty of committing the offence at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam at 10.10am on June 13, 2005.

He said the drugs were found concealed in the ceiling of Mohd Zamri's van after he was stopped at a border checkpoint and taken to the immigration's store for an inspection.

Deputy public prosecutor Saidah Mohd Halil appeared for the prosecution while Mohd Zamri was represented by counsel Mohd Amir Abdul Rani.

Mohd Zamri's mother fainted after the judgment was delivered but he remained calm.

Mohd Amir said he would appeal the decision.
