Peru: Motorist gets 10 years in pot seizure

NewsTribune

Friday 11 Jun 2010

A Vietnamese motorist pleaded guilty Thursday to hauling more than 100 pounds of marijuana and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Hung The Truong, 40, of 66 Tirrell St., Apt. 2L, Quincy, Mass. pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver (downgraded from cannabis trafficking), a Class X felony carrying 6-30 years in prison.

He was charged Feb. 21 on Route 251 southbound at 38th Street in Peru for failure to signal and improper lane usage.

The state trooper who conducted the traffic stop reported smelling the odor of cannabis and a subsequent search of the cargo area revealed a hide-a-bed couch that contained 17 packages of suspected cannabis where the mattress should have been.

In all, police seized 102.7 pounds. Truong, who was ordered held on $2 million bond, told police he’d agreed to ship the cannabis to a source (not named in open court) in Massachusetts.
Truong, who has no criminal history, could be released from prison in 2012.
