UK: Cannabis reclassification: Legalise Cannabis Alliance: Reclassification

politics.co.uk

Thursday 19 Jan 2006

----
Campaigners Legalise Cannabis Alliance has criticised the government's
review of classification, branding it "a load of hype and baloney".

Spokesman Don Barnard told politics.co.uk that the current confusion
about cannabis arises from how the police have interpreted the law, and
was the fault of politicians.

And on the potential mental health effects of cannabis, he said: "I am
very concerned for a small minority of people - there should be real
education for young people on the potential risks of cannabis.

"I concede now that the consensus has been since the 1960s that there is
a small percentage of people who are affected by using them.

"But how will reclassification solve those problems? It won't. Putting
people in jail is not the way to address the problem.

"There has to be a challenge to the criminal justice system because the
debate can't go further until the government addresses this."
